A pioneering decarbonization project in Scandinavia sets a new benchmark for energy-efficient digestate valorization.
FE by France Evaporation announced a world-first technical achievement in the digestate industry: the successful commissioning of a high-temperature heat pump (HTHP), coupled with a mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) loop, at an anaerobic digestion (biogas) site in Scandinavia.
The core innovation lies in recovering thermal energy that was previously lost and reinjecting it into the process, allowing the site to effectively eliminate its reliance on fossil-fuel-based steam and transition to a 100% electric installation.
> A significant milestone in the evolution of energy-efficient digestate treatment technologies.
Steam generation is traditionally one of the most energy-intensive and costly components of digestate processing, relying on fossil fuel combustion. By pairing a heat pump with an MVR loop, FE’s engineering teams designed a fully electrified system that recycles thermal energy on-site, removing the steam requirement entirely and cutting both energy use and operating costs while maintaining high operational performance.
The result is a highly optimized installation that operates with electricity as its primary energy source, supporting the transition toward low-carbon industrial operations.
> Powering low-carbon industrial operations with electricity-driven innovation
The new system delivers several key improvements for the site’s day-to-day operations:
- a significant reduction in primary energy demand through the elimination of fossil-fuel-based steam generation, resulting in a substantially lower carbon footprint;
- a significant reduction in operational costs, driven by the shift to a fully electric setup;
- more reliable, stable and smoother processes, thanks to full automation of the equipment.
> Accelerating industrial decarbonization
In addition to their environmental and operational benefits, projects of this nature can often qualify for dedicated public decarbonization support schemes.
Such initiatives reflect the growing commitment of governments and industry stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of sustainable industrial technologies and support the transition to lower-carbon operations.
This achievement further reinforces FE’s position as a leading provider of innovative evaporation, concentration and energy recovery solutions for the environmental, biogas and wastewater treatment sectors.
> A new reference for the industry
With this world-first implementation in the digestate sector, FE demonstrates that industrial decarbonization can be achieved through practical, proven and economically viable technologies.
By transforming wasted heat into valuable process energy, this project demonstrates how the industry of the future is already taking shape today within FE.
